Sermon Notes

River Church – Mall of America

Sunday Dec. 4, 2005

John Wickland

Power of Our Words

We need to be careful with the words that we use. What people say influences how people perceive them.

We have scripture to use and those words are the truth. They can expose us for who we really are. We can experience freedom if we let those words help us.

Joh 10:10

(10) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

We can have a full life. Think of it, think of what you have that gets empty and it never being that way again.

Peoples word do not give us much to live by, but theWord does.

We need to tell others about what Christ means to us. God cares about his people. We need to share that with others. We as a church individually and as a whole are called to advance the Gospel. Each person is a link in the church and needs to be put to work as the church is only as strong as the weakest link.

1Co 12:14-27

(14) For the body is not one member, but many.

(15) If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

(16) And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

(17) If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

(18) But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

(19) And if they were all one member, where were the body?

(20) But now are they many members, yet but one body.

(21) And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

(22) Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

(23) And those members of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

(24) For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honor to that part which lacked:

(25) That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

(26) And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it.

(27) Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

We have no control over when things will happen. We need to leave the results of telling people about God to other people. We need to do our part of the body.

Act 8:26-40

(26) And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

(27) And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

(28) Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Isaiah the prophet.

(29) Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

(30) And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Isaiah, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

(31) And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

(32) The place of the Scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

(33) In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

(34) And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

(35) Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same Scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

(36) And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

(37) And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

(38) And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

(39) And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

(40) But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

We are not going to be able to understand the timing of things. The Holy Spirit will move and dramatically change our plans. God will take care of the timing and we need know that and He controls the results as well. Doing that you can share the message and not worry about the results.

"That's why we're releasing one of our most requested features: sorting by oldest-first."
One of my most requested features at least. If you have not tried Google Reader I recommend it highly. Now that this feature has been added, I like it even more as I like to see the progression of feeds not the regression. If you do not know what RSS feeds are, look at it for an idea.

Interesting Interface - But will it make it??

An intereesting video on a new interface that I find interesting as a creative tool but I am not sure what use it would have in a business enviornment. If business can not use it, can it grow?

Thanksgiving

Sermon notes from River Church Pod Cast.

Unless otherwise noted, all verses are King James version.

River Church (Mall of America) Nov. 27, 2005

Pastor Chris Reinertson

Matt 11

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus is wrapped up with things going on row (in Context) yet He opens His heart in prayer to the Father. He calls others to the father as well.

In chapters 10 and 11 we see he has a traveling ministry of speaking and also training the disciples as well. While this is goings on, John the Baptists is in jail, and questions his faith and sends his disciples to Jesus with questions. After all this he goes to 3 towns to teach some more. But they were indifferent to Him. Those who know him the best are rejecting Him.

Do we want to be like Jesus here? With all of these problem going on He breaks out in prayer to the Father. How was Jesus this way? He did spiritual exercises each day.

Five commands that we are to do each day.

Psalms 100:1-5

1 A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands

Shout- make an earth shattering joyous sound.

2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Worship - King James says serve- to do all out for a Sovereign ruler. What is your attitude of the work that you do for God? Do you do it in gladness?

Number 3 is to sing to God. Do it in public but also do it privately.

3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

God is God, we are not. He made us and we belong to Him. He will take Care of us. We can not do it our selves. Acknowledge God as source of our thanksgiving.

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Because we are Christians and we have the spirit in us, we have the temple. We must enter into Thanksgiving.

These are commands for us to do. They are not suggestions. Do we do these daily?

Lack of sermon notes lately

I have had no time to post my sermon notes from Church or God-Casts (Christina Podcasts). The reason is that I have been working on my MBA. For the next month or so I will be studying for the comprehensive test as I have completed all my course work, but I intend to pick up on my general comments as well as some of the news that I have been doing all along and notes from sermons as well.
Starting with my next post I will start going through my sermon notes from this point forward (not posting old stuff unless it is in the Podcast que to listen to ).

It is good not to have to study for classes any more...

Toys for Tots rejects Jesus doll - Yahoo! News

Toys for Tots rejects Jesus doll - Yahoo! News:
"A suburban Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on Biblical figures.

But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and 'we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations,' said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Va."

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

Let me get this straight. The Holiday Christmas celebrates whose Birthday. By nature, the Jewish or Muslim population would not celebrate it. So why is it not OK to include these dolls????

But a Wiccan symbol representing earth, air, fire, water and spirit isn't recognized by the federal government for veterans' grave markers."

So let me get this straight. When it is Halloween and they want to decorate the schools with wiccan symbols it is not a religion, BUT when it comes to their faith, they are. What am I missing here???

Jordan's mind: Sunday And Beyond!!!

Perusing Technorati today I found this tidbit:

Jordan's mind: Sunday And Beyond!!!: "As pastor Jason said, we see this concept every day, even if we don't recognize it. When we take a bite of food we always know that it is, to some degree, giving us life. (yes, even junk food) What we usually don't remember is that, what we are eating is Also, to some degree, DEAD.(yes, even those healthy veggies)"
Now I am not sure what scares me most, that I kid thought this up, or that I did not think it myself......

Anyway, deep religious implications here I am sure...

FOXNews.com - IRS Makes it Cheaper to Call Long Distance - Finance | Personal | Business | Personal Finances:

Good news, the IRS is paying me money this year (and you as well)

"While it may have only added a dollar or so to the average household’s monthly phone bill, when you multiply this by every home and business with telephone service you can see how this seemingly tiny amount adds up. By the Treasury Department’s own estimate, it could end up refunding as much as $10 million.

The good news is that to receive a refund you don’t have to resurrect all of your phone bills dating back to March 2003. The IRS looked at data provided by phone companies and came up with an average amount of tax paid based on the number of individuals in a household. From this they came up with “standard” refund amounts tied to the number of exemptions you claim on your tax return:

Exemptions Standard Refund
1 ----------------$30
2 ----------------$40
3 ----------------$50
4 ----------------$60

In other words, a family of four will get $60 back. ($60 is the maximum refund.)"

Maybe it is not much but it helps...

And all the NASCAR drivers said AMEN! That driver is an accident waiting to happen. You do not race a top 10 car like he did when he was 3 laps down. Tony Steward says he is a dart with no feathers. I do not know what Jack Rouch sees in that driver. Let us hope that he is gone soon. Oh the other hand the sponsor for his car may like the publicity. He is to drive the AAA car next year.

Speed Channel suspends analyst for on-air remarks about Hispanics - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports:
"A pit reporter for Speed Channel's broadcasts of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races has been suspended for this weekend's race at Martinsville after making on-air comments the network felt were racially insensitive.

'Ray Dunlap has been suspended for one race for making comments on-air that the company found inappropriate,' Speed vice president for media relations Erik Arneson said Thursday."

You know I watch the show regularly (ma and about 6 other people I am sure) and I watched the show in question. I wished I had taped it. I know that I am not Hispanic but I cannot for the life of me remember anything that anyone would take offense to other that he stated the obvious. I remember the most offensive thing that he said was that the only way you could get x% of the people at some track to be Hispanic was if you counted up all the workers at the track.
Let's face it. NASCAR is a rich man's sport if you go to the track. While they may have a 10% Hispanic fan base on TV, I am sure that there are not 10% fans at the track that are Hispanic.
Political correctness has run amok!
I am sure that the reason that he did not get a bigger suspension was not many people watch it and it was not his normal duties to be a guest on this show.

Government skeptical of threat against NFL stadiums - USATODAY.com:
"The Homeland Security Department alerted authorities and stadium owners in those cities, as well as the NFL, of the Web message but said the threat was being viewed 'with strong skepticism.' Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was no intelligence that indicated such an attack was imminent, and that the alert was 'out of an abundance of caution.'

'The department strongly encourages the public to continue to go about their plans, including attending events that involve large public gatherings such as football games,' Knocke said."

On the other hand, should this occurrence actually have happened, they can always say "I told you and you did not listen!"

Either it is a threat or it is not. Take it seriously or leave it alone. I do not need the extra anxiety of thinking it will happen. Of course, I can not afford to go to these sporting events anyway.

As a part time instructor in computer technology I have found that this is so true. Many of my students are familiar with what I teach but do not know the technical name for it. Of course another interesting thing is that many have heard the terms but do not know what they are. When I introduced Blogs in my class this semester, many had heard the term but did not know what it was. Seems the door goes both ways on this one.

T-Shirts and beliefs

Got this as part of an email from Integrity Music:

Hearts On Our Shirts

Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.

On a recent trip to the supermarket, I counted 17 people of all ages wearing T-shirts that proclaimed brand names, ideas, opinions and beliefs. And I wondered what, if anything, those words meant to the people wearing them. I was reminded of Deuteronomy 11:18-21: "So commit yourselves completely to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands as a reminder...Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. Write them on the doorposts of your house...so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish...." Whether we wear it on a T-shirt or not, what a wonderful promise that, as we grow in our knowledge of God's Word, He will cause our lives to flourish and thrive in Him!

I had never really thought that the T-shirt that I wear was part of what Deut 11 was telling the Hebrew people to do. If you are a Christian, does wearing a t-shirt with a bar on it(Eskimo Joes, Planet Hollywood) sound like a good thing to do, or how those that come from Abercrombie and Finch.

It is a fairly well established fact that the unplanned pregnancy birthrate increased after the pill was introduced. I cannot see how giving a person a chance to take a pill to make it all better will be any different.
Our society is in a 'take a pill' mode. Let's get to the real problem behind the situation, not a quick fix. I have no problem with rape victims using a pill like this, but over the counter is different.

"The Cartoon Network is developing a 'massively' multiplayer online game in the vein of 'World of Warcraft' and 'EverQuest' for kids 6 to 14.

The yet-to-be-named game, expected to launch in 2008, will let players interact with Cartoon Network characters like Mac, Bloo and the Kids Next Door."

Can you say "Neopets competition"? I guess if something works, you steal the idea. Here the combine World of Warcraft with Neotpets. I shudder to think of the results.

Which one do you think is the bigger kid?

So just which one is the bigger kid?

New Monopoly game uses debit card, no cash - Yahoo! News:
"A British version of the classic Monopoly board game released this week substitutes a Visa-imprinted debit card for the stacks of yellow, blue and purple play money long hoarded by children worldwide."
In the new British version of Monopoly Here & Now, players type amounts into a palm-sized scanner and swipe their debit cards to seal the deal.
Guess the term for counterfit money that I used for so long 'Monopoly Money' will have to go out as well. Does this mean that a counterfeit credit card will be a 'Monopoly Visa'

Those Who Do Not Learn from History...

This was weird looking at and seeing what was back then, and where we have come from...

CBS Hopes to Beat Other Networks With Ad

CBS Hopes to Beat Other Networks With Ad:
"More than 35 million eggs will be marked with phrases such as 'CSI: Crack the Case on CBS' and 'The Class, New Grade-A CBS Comedy' as part of a deal between the CBS Marketing Group and EggFusion, an egg-coding company."

I am really sure that this idea is kind of cracked-up. Oh, did I really say that. Oh well, hope you got the yoke.

Gays accused of discrimination in resort town - Yahoo! News

Gays accused of discrimination in resort town - Yahoo! News:
"Gay-marriage advocates have set up a Web site -- www.knowthyneighbor.org -- that publishes the names of people who have signed the petition, including at least two locals in Provincetown who say they have been singled out and verbally abused by gays since their names appeared on the Web site."

I guess tolerance is a one way street. If you want tolerance, you have to give tolerance IMHO. Of course I am now a redneck from Oklahoma instead of the Yankee I used to be.

Online 'advergames' target kids - Games - MSNBC.com

Online 'advergames' target kids - Games - MSNBC.com

Let me give you a clue parents (as one who has them from 8 to 26), the computer has an off switch. Shut it off, take out the plug and hide it, whatever. Tell the kids to go out and play, take them to the library and get a good book to read. Let's not blame the new one-eyed monster for all of the worlds ills like our parents tried to do woth the TV.

You Can Do It - Dad Can Help

Annie and Israel went with Dad to the Home Depot for the monthly project. This month it was a Sports Rack. Here Israel is deeply studying the nails so that he can make sure that he hits it on the head. Posted by Picasa

Home Depot Part 2

Annie was upset. Here she is carefully trying to hit the nails, instead of her thumbs which she had a terrible time avoiding. Posted by Picasa

Akihabara News - 10 year anniversary Special Edition Tamagochi

Please make it go away. To make matters worse, Annie saw the article and now wants one. I told her no because her mom would be in school and she could not take care of it, so she asked if I could... NO!

Israel and the 1st time swimmin

We took a trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansa recently. My son Israel had his first trip into a swiming pool. He took to it like a duck takes to water. Here he is splashing through the pool.
Of course as a first timmer he had to have a little help keeping a float. So that is why the yellow floaty thing.

Men of the Square Table

Guess Miller light people are afraid of religion. I tried to add "Real Men Love Jesus" and they flaged Jesus as an unacceptable word.

Where is the Logic in this

Student faces expulsion for Web post:
"Superintendent John Harper, who cannot comment on student cases, said the district will take action if it believes there is a safety issue. Meanwhile a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union said school districts must be careful not to discipline students on matters that occur outside school. The student's attorney believes Plainfield School District is overstepping its boundaries."

So if they restrict speech, they get sued, if they do not, they get sued when the kid goes nuts cause they should have known better.

Bush Advises Graduates on Technology - Yahoo! News:
"'If he's coming to my town, I'm going to let him know he's not welcome here and that Oklahomans are not as bright as they think,' said Laurie Keeley, 25, a protester from Tulsa."

Wow, could this woman be right? And she lives in Oklahoma too!

Maybe she is not as bright as she thinks she .....

Nah, better not go there, I live in Oklahoma also.

Tom and Katie Welcome Daughter Suri - Yahoo! News

Tom and Katie Welcome Daughter Suri - Yahoo! News:
"The girl, named Suri, came into the world at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 inches long. Her name has its origins in Hebrew, meaning 'princess,' or in Persian, meaning 'red rose,' Robinson said in a statement."
Or for us in Oklahoma, it is a wooden device with wheels, drawn by a horse, and usually has a covering with fringe all around it.

That is all you are going to hear from me on this celebrity birth, the joke was just too good to pass up.

Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/13/2006 | Delta pilots march as talks continue

Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/13/2006 | Delta pilots march as talks continue:
"More than 300 Delta Air Lines Inc. pilots marched near the company's headquarters yesterday and placed a giant inflatable rat on a street corner to symbolize what they see as corporate greed in management's effort to void their contract and impose pay cuts."

Does anyone else see the contradiction in this. They protest management greed, but how much do they make? I would wager that I could live a good long time on one week's salery that these guys make. GREED INDEED!

NASCAR calls TV magazine 'outrageous' for tactics - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports

When is a story not a story
The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing said the NBC network's "Dateline NBC" confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans' reactions. The NBC crew was "apparently on site in Martinsville, Virginia, walked around and no one bothered them," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday.

Maybe because it was not the story that everyone wanted it to be.

Austria detects bird flu in cats

Austria detects bird flu in cats

The discovery, in the southern state of Styria, follows the detection of H5N1 in a dead cat in Germany last week.

That case was thought to be the first example outside Asia of the virus crossing species to infect a mammal.

Not a good sign of times to come. One would assume that these animals at a shelter would be seperated by cages, therefore this is now an airborne mutation.

FOXSports.com - MLB- Gowdy's voice will be missed

FOXSports.com - MLB- Gowdy's voice will be missed:
"Where does he rank among the all-time sportscasters? In my opinion, he's one of the all-time best. He worked in an era where less was expected than modern-day announcers. He didn't have the network longevity that today's super-announcers have. But Gowdy dominated an era like no one else. His voice is missed. His expertise is missed. There aren't many left that remember DiMaggio and Williams in vivid detail."

Another of the voices of my youth is gone. Many Red Sox games in my youth that I watched on the old black and white TV were voiced by this wonderful talent. And he was the voice of American Sportsman on ABC and many of the parts of ABC's Wide World of Sports. He made me interested in many sports I would never have followed otherwise. Curt, we have missed you for years, I am sad that your voice will now be silenced forever.

Windows Wireless Flaw a Danger to Laptops

Windows Wireless Flaw a Danger to Laptops

Here is another Windows 'feature' that you might want to know about. It is amazing that one could create an ad-hoc network and not even know that they were doing it.
